HAMILTON COUNTY-- When a tip led Hamilton County authorities to a secluded property east of McLeansboro, they only expected to find a couple piles of marijuana plants.

"There was probably two to three pounds of marijuana scattered here," said Hamilton County Sheriff Greg Brenner.

But when members of the Southern Illinois Drug Task Force followed a water hose through the grounds, they were led to a massive amount of pot.

"We thought it was a fairly small patch at the time, but it just kept going, and going, and going," said Brenner. "And total so far, we're estimating anywhere from two to three thousand marijuana plants."

According to the sheriff, all of that green equals some serious cash, $6 million worth to be exact.

"Which according to the task force is about the biggest marijuana grow operation that they've run into in southern Illinois, and it's sure the biggest we've ever had here in Hamilton County," Brenner said.

Authorities say no one was on the property when they seized the plants, but they did find a newspaper article from a pot bust two weeks ago. Brenner says the growers either had it as a warning, or something else.

"Or that it was kind of their joke, that the cops may have got 126 plants, but we've got all this out here, and they don't have ours," said Brenner. "Well, I guess they're not laughing about it quite so much now."

Aside from a pull out couch and some small items, the house doesn't seem like it was used to live in. Instead, Brenner says it was used to string up marijuana buds that had just been harvested.

"It was more or less a camp-out situation," Brenner said. "And our belief is basically they were just back here for a short period of time, maybe a week or two weeks, to get all of this harvested and processed."

According to the sheriff, nobody is in custody at this time, but it is exciting for his department to be apart of a bust of this magnitude.

"It'll be even better if we can go ahead and make some arrests from it," Brenner said. "But just the fact that we've got that many thousands of dollars worth of drugs off the street, it's hard to describe."
