Army vs College and job
I'm trying to think things out about what I should do with my life. I've applied to the Army, college, and to lots of jobs but now it's just thinking about them.
I got pretty much all the way up to just swearing into the Army but then talked to family and friends and got talked out of it. Few days ago I went back into the recruiter's office and told them I got talked out of it and I would just go to college and get a job. They told me to come back when I was ready to be a leader and not a follower (and when I stop letting my sisters run my life lol). For some reason their words have been bouncing around in my head and I can't get them out. I keep wondering if that was the right choice or yet another missed opportunity in my life.
I applied for college but was late on signing up for classes so I got one class on a waiting list. No one dropped from the class so I didn't get it and I have to wait till the next semester or when ever I came apply again. I have no money to pay for it so I can get federal grants and stuff to help me out. Everyone keeps telling me to just go to college and get a job tho. All I would take is a two year degree in welding and then go out and look for construction jobs or find a opening in a welding shop.
Jobs right now suck major ass. Since the economy is fucked right now and unemployment is high I'm competing with dozens of other people for every job a apply to. Only thing is that everyone else that is apply has way more experience or have more schooling then I do. This pretty much puts me at the bottom of the list every time and I'm lucky to even get a call saying to come in. I actually got a call to come in for an interview to get a temp job taking down shelves and putting them up somewhere else. My last job was as a carpenter doing the exact same thing and yet I didn't even get a call back from the interviewer (made me rage for weeks).
TL;DR I'm stuck deciding between joining the army or going to college and doing the same thing I do now. Thought it would help to just write it out a bit and get feed back on what you would do.

Re: Army vs College and job
From a vets perspective....
The recruiters are going to say all kinds of fucked up shit to get you to sign. Don't let what they say make your choice for you. I enlisted in the army during Desert Storm in '92. I know it was different times then but it was the most racist environment I have ever experienced. The only thing I can compare it to is the HBO prison show "OZ". There was a very definite "gang mentality" that wasn't fun to live in....considering we were all on the "same side".
If you are seriously considering the military then make it work for you as much as you work for it. What I mean by this is don't be a grunt. Join the military with the intention of learning a skill that will benefit you on the outside as well. I get the impression that your rather tech savy so with that in mind I would lean more to joining the AirForce instead. The AirForce tends to be a lot more tech and a lot less grunt. So unless you have your heart set on being in the infantry I would strongly consider those factors.
I'm happy to answer any questions you might have, I know how tough the recruitment process can be.

D: I didn't know you did that.
I only have my GED so I don't even know if I can go air force since they're all tightening up on it. I passed the test they gave higher then everyone else in the group tho. Wanted to go for infantry or some sort of engineer.
How was boot camp and did you end up deploying?

Re: Army vs College and job
I never deployed, Desert Storm was over waaaay too fast.
Basic is just a big mind fuck. They want to break you down and rebuild you into what they want and need you to be.
The best advice I can give you is be really picky about what you choose as an MOS (Military Occupational Station). Be sure to pick something that your not going to mind doing day in and day out and for many hours at a time. Also, if your going to give all this time to the army be sure to get something back. Like a skill you can use after you discharge. Tell me...how much demand is there for ex-infantrymen out there? Not too much out side of BlackWater. Learn a skill that can help you land a job in a career you enjoy. Don't forget about the GI Bill either.....get Uncle Sam to pay for college. You can even attend classes while on post as long as your not deployed somewhere.

Re: Army vs College and job
I dont recommend joining the army when there is a never ending war going on in Afghanistan. There is absolutely no way it can end well and you are better off going to college and getting a job. I say, whait unti NATO invades Iran/North Korea before joining.

You sir are correct, but in Canada we're withdrawing from Afghanistan in December leaving only 750 troops to train the Afghan Army and Police Forces. If he was Canadian, I'd actually recommend he join since it would be an easy job. He'd just have to deal with 50 year old outdated obsolete equipment that falls apart when dust lands on it. That and boats still made out of wood with canvas sails.

Welp, going in for more tests and a physical tomorrow. I have to spend the night in some hotel while I'm there.
Wonder if I'm allowed to smoke outside the hotel, other wise mass boredom will set in.

Re: Army vs College and job
FUUUUUUU! Started the medical at 5AM and didn't get out till 2PM with no food.
Took my medical and some tests. Then when I was going down to pick a job they said they probably fucked up one test and that I had to go home. On the way home I asked my recruiter what the difference in jobs in active and reserves are. Thats when they told me that theres no combat MOS in the Reserve (I'm looking right now and it says there is).
So even tho they knew that was the only reason I wanted to join they still probably tried to get me in the reserves. If I can then I'll go 11B, if not then I'll have to see what jobs they have. Last two days were boring as fuck tho.

Re: Army vs College and job
Ohh I should probably add that quite a few recruits kept talking about black ops. Comparing everything they were about to do in the army to black ops. Asking if people in the army called the grenade launchers noobtubes. Pretty much wiggling in their seats trying to contain their boners as the thought of them getting to fire live rounds would be so incredibly awesome sauce. Then something about how they we weren't going to use the M16A2 and the M4 and they were going to give us some new weapons that had "Five more bullets then the extended CLIPS on the M16". Every fucking time they said "clips" I wanted to beat the shit out of them for some reason.
Then some kid talked about Homefront and how it's ubber real like right guys?!?!? Then I had to explain to the people what Homefront was. Then they laughed when I told them it was Korea taking over the US. After that they were talking about MOH and pretty much just tuned them all out after that I went to get my blood tests.
EDIT) The gun they were talking about was also "Lots more powerful then the AK47".

WTF ONE HIT KILL WITH AK 47?! OP OP OP!!!!!!!
Re: Army vs College and job
good luck my friend.........i hope it's everything you need it to be.
The recruiter is full of shit btw...there are indeed combat MOS's in the reserves and national guard.
If you can't go 11B check out 21B (combat engineer) which has many, many specialty postions.
